How does the latest news about air pollution affect you and your stove?
The latest news about air pollution may have left you wondering how it affects you and your stove, so we wanted to explain the proposed changes and how you can ensure your home and stove adhere to the changes.
Like Logs Ltd is a responsible family run business based in East London and we totally agree with Sadiq Khan’s call for more powers to control and improve the air quality in our city.
His proposed measures would include:
- Zero emission zones in small areas from 2025 onwards.
- The new legislation not banning existing wood-burning stoves. However, any new stoves thatare sold would have to be cleaner.
- Not burning wet wood. People would be encouraged to burn dry seasoned wood, which emitsfewer particulates than wet wood.
- Councils being given new powers, such as limiting what people can burn or introducing ‘no-burn days’.
What are we already doing to help?
We follow strict safety regulations as we are HETAS registered professionals. It’s our job to improve information to empower our customers to buy the most efcient stoves. Once installed, we send you a reminder of when your annual safety check and chimney sweep is due.
Installing lower-emission stoves. The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA), has an ‘Ecodesign Ready’ label. These SIA stoves have 90% less particulate emissions than open res and 80% less than older, out of date stoves. They don’t cost more than other stoves but they are better built and have been designed to minimise pollution; the ideal choice for any ecologically minded homeowner wanting a log burning stove.
What you can do:
Book a chimney sweep. Did you know that if you don’t get your chimney swept annually your home insurance isn’t valid? Not only that, getting your chimney swept quarterly when in use, and at least once a year, ensures your chimney is clean and safe. Clean chimneys help the environment by assisting the complete combustion of the fuel which in turn, lowers emissions. Book a sweep with Like Logs Ltd, as we are accredited to the National Association of Chimney Sweeps and HETAS.
Only use dry wood. The reduction in particulate emissions when using dry wood is substantial. This is the most positive message we can relay and it is based on scientific research. Dry wood is so much cleaner in use and makes stoves work more efciently and to their full capacity. When buying wood, look out for the Woodsure Ready to Burn Scheme logo, it gives assurance that the logs have less than 20% moisture content and therefore ‘ready to burn’ now. Any wet wood must be seasoned/dried before use.
